Keller Community Hospital West Point

The United States Army opened the Brian D. Allgood Ambulatory Clinic at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Designed by EwingCole, the new clinic is open to the West Point community and offers the Military and their beneficiaries’ easier access to high quality, patient-centered care.

The 51,000-square-foot Allgood Clinic is a seamless addition to the Keller Army Community Hospital. It contains optometry, ophthalmology, physical therapy, and orthopedics clinics, as well as TRICARE administrative space. In keeping with the Defense Health Agency’s vision, the design accommodates the ‘Patient Centered Medical Home’ care model.

“The planning and design allows the clinic to quickly respond to changes in patient demands and physician services without the need for costly renovations.” said John Capelli, AIA, project principal. “This provides unmatched adaptability for the Army.”

EwingCole designed the $31 million Allgood Clinic with a particular focus on patient well-being. Patients will now have access to medical care in an aesthetic environment comparable to private sector facilities, including a modern entrance, lobby, and a clear circulation path that allows access to daylight and views of the historic USMA campus.

“EwingCole’s design strategy was to create domestically-scaled interiors that evoke a connection with nature by using materials such as wood and stone, whose variations in color and texture warm the space,” said EwingCole designer Saul Jabbawy.

Designed to achieve LEED certification, the Clinic’s overall energy model demonstrates 19% less building energy cost than comparable facilities and includes a 20% reduction in water use, an EPA Energy Star-rated step-down transformer, and a roof-top photovoltaic cell array for on-site renewable energy. Careful design solutions conceal the array in order to maintain the campus’ position on the National Register of Historic Places.

With the opening of the Allgood Clinic, the hospital is now implementing its five-year renewal plan developed with EwingCole. Upon completion, the Keller Army Community Hospital will have a DHA World Class Facility to match their current World Class Care.
