The Smithonsian’s Mathias Lab “seems like a fun place to work”

PHILADELPHIA (Oct 2015) – EwingCole is pleased to announce that the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s Charles McC. Mathias Laboratory is the recipient of an Honor Award, given by the American Institute of Architects Maryland Chapter.

The awards were announced at a ceremony at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club in Stevensville, MD. Selected from a field of 129 professional entries, the Mathias Laboratory project was one of twelve entries to receive an Honor Award.  EwingCole’s project designer, Andrew Donaldson-Evans and Cultural practice leader Jeff Hirsch were on hand to receive the award.

Mathias Laboratory at SERC is a LEED Platinum facility that significantly expands SERC’s research and education mission to explore and understand the impact of human behavior on natural ecosystems.  SERC’s design directive was challenging: underpin world-class environmental science and expand critical educational outreach with up-to-date facilities that demonstrate leading practices in energy conservation, sustainable design, and ecological sensitivity.

The mission of the Maryland AIA awards program is to recognize outstanding architectural achievements. The Chapter was formed in 1965.
