US Army Opens EwingCole Designed Brian D. Allgood Ambulatory Clinic

The United States Army opened the Brian D. Allgood Ambulatory Clinic at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Designed by EwingCole, the new clinic is open to the West Point community and offers the Military and their beneficiaries’ easier access to high quality, patient-centered care.

The 51,000-square-foot Allgood Clinic is a seamless addition to the Keller Army Community Hospital. It contains optometry, ophthalmology, physical therapy, and orthopedics clinics, as well as TRICARE administrative space. In keeping with the Defense Health Agency’s vision, the design accommodates the ‘Patient Centered Medical Home’ care model.

“The planning and design allows the clinic to quickly respond to changes in patient demands and physician services without the need for costly renovations.” said John Capelli, AIA, project principal. “This provides unmatched adaptability for the Army.”

EwingCole designed the $31 million Allgood Clinic with a particular focus on patient well-being. Patients will now have access to medical care in an aesthetic environment comparable to private sector facilities, including a modern entrance, lobby, and a clear circulation path that allows access to daylight and views of the historic USMA campus.

“EwingCole’s design strategy was to create domestically-scaled interiors that evoke a connection with nature by using materials such as wood and stone, whose variations in color and texture warm the space,” said EwingCole designer Saul Jabbawy.

Designed to achieve LEED certification, the Clinic’s overall energy model demonstrates 19% less building energy cost than comparable facilities and includes a 20% reduction in water use, an EPA Energy Star-rated step-down transformer, and a roof-top photovoltaic cell array for […]

EwingCole Designed Outpatient Facility is Modern Healthcare’s Gold-Prize Winner

EwingCole’s design of Memorial Sloan Kettering’s newest regional cancer center was recently named the recipient of the Modern Healthcare’s 2015 Gold-Prize Award. The award program recognizes excellence in the design and planning of healthcare facilities.

The challenge for the design team was converting the dated brick and metal panel building with large floor plates into a state of the art cancer center which upheld MSK’s preeminence as a leader in cancer treatment and reflected their high standard of care.

The building not only accomplished the stringent task of achieving LEED Gold but also implemented additional healthy-building initiatives such as specifying entirely PVC-free products for both construction and design.

EwingCole Designs Urgent Care Center from former Shopping Center

EwingCole Designs Urgent Care Center from former Shopping Center
New walk-in facility eases busy ER

Camp Hill, PA (July 2013) — A new Urgent Care Center designed by EwingCole has opened adjacent to the Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill. EwingCole redesigned the 50,000 sf former shopping center to include the 6,000 sf, walk-in Spirit Urgent Care.

“Spirit Urgent Care will relieve the strain on the Holy Spirit Emergency Department, which had reached an all-time high of 50,000 visits annually,” said healthcare planner Karan Hoffman. “In designing a facility that cares for those with non-life-threatening conditions, the location and size of the old shopping center was well-suited to adaptive reuse.”

The new Urgent Care Center houses eight exam rooms, including one procedure room, one treatment room, one general radiographic X-ray room, a small lab and a centralized nursing station. The walk-in center is designed to be a convenient and affordable option for those with non-emergency health problems like colds and flu, cuts and bruises, ear and throat infections, skin rashes, sprains and minor musculoskeletal injuries.

“When designing Spirit Urgent Care, it was important that the building reflect the same quality of care patients receive at Holy Spirit Hospital,” continued Hoffman. “The challenge was to the change the building’s appearance to be visually interesting and inviting.”

The design objectives were met by expanding the exterior with various shapes consistent with the new plan. These include a porte-cochere entrance with a skylight, various logo towers, a glass entrance foyer, glass waiting room extensions and raised planters.
