EwingCole Completes First Design-Build Project for the United States Military Academy
West Point, NY (March 2012) – EwingCole, one of the nation’s leading architecture, engineering and interior design firms, is the Designer of Record for the recently completed $98,000,000 relocation of the US Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS) from Fort Monmouth, NJ to the grounds of the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point.
“The mission of USMAPS is to provide focused academic, military and physical instruction in a moral and ethical environment, and to prepare, motivate and inspire candidates for success at the USMA,” said John Capelli, AIA, principal and leader of EwingCole’s government practice. “The team developed design solutions that support this mission while leveraging the natural opportunities of the site.”
The 57-acre campus development includes the following:
• 73,000 sf classroom and administrative buildings
• 87,000 sf athletic and fitness space
• 14,000 sf dining and exchange facilities
• 246-bed student quarters
• 3 NCAA athletic fields
Site constraints led to the configuration of the building as a continuous ribbon stretched along the edge of a large, open plane on a steep hillside. This freed virtually the entire plane for athletic fields with little disturbance to the forested hillside, a primary amenity of the site. A gently curving drive leads to the center of the academic block – the heart of the school.
“The new campus seamlessly integrates comfortable dormitories and dining facility, modern classrooms, well-placed office space, and a state-of-the-art athletic complex into an extremely functional and aesthetically pleasing design,” said Col. Tyge Rugenstein, USMAPS Commandant, who took weekly walk-throughs of the site as construction progressed.

EwingCole and WTW Architects Team Up to Design New “Fusion” Building
Philadelphia, PA (June 2012) – EwingCole, an award-winning architecture and engineering firm, in a joint venture with WTW Architects, has been selected by East Stroudsburg University (ESU) to design the new Keystone Commons building.
According to ESU’s 2010 Campus Facilities Master Plan, it was determined that the Center for Hospitality, the University Center, the Computing Center and the Kemp Library were inefficient buildings in need of extensive renovations to accommodate the needs of an increasing student population. In lieu of investing in these aging buildings, ESU determined it was more practical to bring these programs together in a new Keystone Commons.
“Trending on higher education campuses across the country is the design of facilities that collocate previously separated student activities,” said Chuck Rudalavage, AIA, LEED AP, principal of EwingCole’s Higher Education Practice. “The fusing of these four programs into a centrally-located Commons is a tremendous opportunity to change the face of student life on the Campus.”
In order to maintain continuous operations, the 269,000-square-foot Keystone Commons is being constructed in two phases. The first phase is approximately 162,000 square feet and expected to be complete by 2015. The building is being designed to achieve LEED Silver certification and will include digitally interactive spaces for group projects, an art gallery and the University’s campus-wide data center. The project’s estimated construction cost is $90m.

EwingCole Selected to Develop Master Plan for Phelps Memorial Hospital Center
New York, NY (May 2012) – EwingCole, an award-winning architecture and engineering firm, has been selected by the Phelps Memorial Hospital Center to develop a five-year facility master plan. Located on 69-acres in Sleepy Hollow, NY, Phelps Memorial Hospital Center is a 235-bed not-for-profit acute care hospital.
“Phelps Memorial’s overall goal is to develop a framework for near term investment while driving the system’s growth beyond the next five years,” said Andy Jarvis, AIA, LEED AP, principal of EwingCole’s Healthcare Practice.
With magnificent views of the Hudson River, Phelps Memorial Hospital Center has grown rapidly since its founding in 1955 to serve the health needs of Westchester County. Driving the master facility planning process is a number of important expansion and renovation initiatives needed to fulfill its ongoing strategic plan.
“Over the past thirty years, EwingCole has developed and realized master plans for many health systems so we are attuned to the practical considerations of implementation,” continued Jarvis. “At the same time, we incorporate new solutions for the future of healthcare delivery as well as green building, evidence-based lean and lean design strategies.
EwingCole has designed master plans for Bayhealth Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, Geisinger Medical Center, North Shore-LIJ Health System, SUNY Stonybrook and the University of Maryland Medical Center among others.
EwingCole to Design Cancer Center Addition at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
Washington, DC (May 2012) – EwingCole, an award-winning architecture and engineering firm, has been selected by the Johns Hopkins Health System to design a new radiation oncology addition and renovation to the Bayview Medical Office Building. The Sydney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center will open in late 2013.
“The new Kimmel Cancer Center presents an extraordinary opportunity not only to expand treatment capacity but also to create an environment that gives evidence of the compassion and quality of care at Johns Hopkins,” said Andy Jarvis, AIA, LEED AP, principal of EwingCole’s Healthcare Practice.
The 18,000-square-foot addition will include exam/consult rooms, clinical support space, linear accelerators and a radiation therapy simulator. The 7,500-square-foot renovation includes vitals/phlebotomy, an infusion area and oncology pharmacy. The project’s estimated construction cost is $10,500,000.
“Over the past nine years, EwingCole has designed 20 new outpatient cancer centers. Our team of architects, engineers and interior designers are veterans of these projects,” continued Jarvis. “With each new cancer center, we find ways to improve the efficiency of care, enhance the cancer patient’s experience, improve energy efficiency and reduce construction costs.”
EwingCole is a national expert in cancer center design and has designed facilities for National Cancer Institute designated centers including Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Fox Chase Cancer Center, City of Hope National Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. Philadelphia, PA (October 2012) – EwingCole, one of the nation’s leading architecture, engineering, and interior design firms, is pleased to announce that two of the firm’s healthcare projects have each won awards in ENR’s Best Projects of the Mid-Atlantic program and in the AIA Philadelphia Design Awards program. The AIA awards were bestowed on Oct 10; the ENR awards will be given at a Baltimore reception on December 11.
“The diverse criteria of the AIA and ENR reflect the design and engineering excellence that we aspire to as an integrated A/E/I firm,” said Mark Hebden, AIA, president.
The winning projects are the Dale & Frances Hughes Cancer Center at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, PA, and the Phase 2 Pavilion of the Kent Campus Expansion at Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover, DE.

The Hughes Cancer Center won an Honor Award from AIA Philadelphia and an Award of Merit in the Healthcare category from ENR Mid-Atlantic. The AIA Philadelphia jury commented, “I see hope here. The clarity of glass, white walls, the colors of natural courts, and the attention to detail expresses the science involved in healing. Light is the theme. The warmth of the sun lifts the spirit of patients during difficult treatments for cancer. Well composed. Crisply detailed.”

Growing America’s Favorite Pastime…in Israel
EwingCole, together with Brickman Sports Turf Services, was commissioned by the Israeli Association of Baseball (IAB) to develop a concept design and cost estimate for a baseball stadium for their National Team Training Center in Ra’Anana, a suburb of Tel Aviv. The 1,000 seat stadium would have the ability to expand into a larger ballpark with an overlay program for professional games. Baseball remains a niche sport in Israel where the game is mostly played on an assortment of soccer fields. These concept designs are being used by the IAB to generate publicity and raise funds to realize their dream of establishing a home base for their National Team and youth training center.
